For newborns, planting a seed is and excellent way to celebrate birth. Just like your baby, taking care of a seed through germination and into a mature seedling and an established tree is quite a chore. Growing a tree can be equally amazing. The process teaches us how fragile and resilient mother nature is as well. Also, enjoy measuring up your newborn with your newly planted over the years.
Trees store carbon dioxide, help absorb storm water runoff, provide shade and wind cover which help reduce heating and cooling costs and do much, much more. Why not plant a tree every birthday.

Green birthdays aren’t just for kids, grandparents can love a green celebration as much as the little ones. Grandma has spent her last few birthdays taking her grandchildren to museums and other fun and educational venues. We thought we’d celebrate her birthday with a globe cake this year.

What kind of green birthday would be meaningful for grandpa? Well, I never really thought of my own father as “grandpa” until my son was born, but these days I find myself referring to him more and more as grandpa.
I wanted to do something that would be special for grandpa on his birthday but also be something that would honor him, be good for the planet and be something that the whole family could enjoy.
What we decided on was to plant an American Chestnut in grandpa’s front yard. Grandpa, dad and grandson all lined up for our first shot together in front of the newly planted chestnut. We decided that we would all grow together and for generations to come.

My son turned two years old today. Two glorious years and we love him more each day.
Parenthood isn’t always easy and different parents surely struggle with their own unique childrearing issues. For me, on top of typical parent-infant struggles like bedtime, tossing food and leaving the library when it is time to go, my son’s birth has got me thinking more and more about the impact that one child and one birth has on the planet.
It started to hit me after the honeymoon period of new parenthood wore off. We did start off with cloth diapers but in spite of this fact, to date I estimate that for one and a half years at an average of four diapers a day, my son is responsible for 2184 land filled diapers. Add to that 1400 sanitary wipes. My son is only two years old and he already has over 137 lbs. of toys. Even though most of these things are hand-me-downs, we have not been able to curb the onslaught of stuff. If we take national averages of Americans’ contribution to the waste stream, over the course of the average American lifespan, my son will create 170,000 pounds of trash. One can hear numbers like this and read about the exponential impact of human population on earth, but parenthood made this abstract concept very real for me.
